Australian-born Hubert Clifford started his musical career in Melbourne but came to England in 1930 and remained there for the rest of his career. He taught music in a boys’ grammar school, moved to the BBC and then became Alexander Korda’s music director at London Films, ending as the BBC’s Head of Light Music
